Tragedy struck Friday night when 15 year old Sergio Romero was killed by a on-coming truck. Sergio was crossing the street after attending the teen night at the Jasmine Alternative Music School located on North Milpas Street.
Sergio was an active member of JAMS. He regularly attended our free Friday night teen program, a program we launched to give local teens a place where they can both express themselves freely and learn to play an instrument. Sergio spent the evening preparing to make his debut performance at the 2011 Avocado Festival with his band mates, Nick Vargas and Josh Webb. That night they played beautifully and they were excited to play their first show.
My band was also scheduled to play the 25th year celebration of the Avocado festival. However, we felt the show could only go on if Sergio was there. We enlarged a picture of Sergio smiling big with his guitar and it was placed right in front center stage. It felt as if his spirit was with us as we played our set.
Sergio’s band mates decided that Sergio would have wanted them to perform, so they courageously played an amazing set in his honor. I don’t know how they found the strength, but they did.
Sergio's amazing parents Armando and Lupita, so stoic and gracious, and his 10 year old brother, Alan, bravely came to the event to support Nick and Josh and videotape the performance.
While they played the music, I had time to reflect back on and remember why we started JAMS in the first place. JAMS was founded to honor yet another young musician whose life was cut short.
My friends, family, and I created the JAMS music school to honor of my little girl Jasmine who was killed in a freak accident in Yosemite. My last memories of her were that of the music she was just discovering - she had an amazing voice and was an aspiring singer/songwriter.
Today, JAMS is here to enrich people’s lives and nurture the next generation through the power of music. Many studies have shown that children excel better in math, English, and self esteem with music in their life. It is proven to be important to our society. We believe in it and we are a completely volunteer run organization.
We at JAMS will always honor Sergio's life and all that he did to help the music school. Before he passed, Sergio and a couple of friends took it upon themselves to raise funds for JAMS. With their guitars, voices and a donation jar, they set up on Milpas Street to play music, raise money and awareness for JAMS. He was a budding philanthropist at age 15.
In honor of Sergio, The Star Jasmine Foundation is seeking to establish a scholarship fund, so other kids can have the gift of music. Any funds raised will go to provide free private lessons to those who qualify. We are currently developing a website to facility donations and to honor Sergio.
I am now calling out to the community to proudly participate in honoring and celebrating the lives of these precious children, and give the gift of music to countless others.
We are also planning a benefit concert for Sergio’s family and expect to announce the details in the new future.
Thank you kindly,
